Latest news from the British Championships in Great Yarmouth. Lara Barnes, one of the Controllers in the main tournament sent me the following information on 8/8/07:

'Charlie Storey beat his first GM and got his first IM Norm today at the British. Graeme Oswald only managed a draw, needed a win for a 9 round norm, but still has a chance with a win tomorrow.' (Charlie was actually entered for the Major Open, but moved up to make the numbers even!)

The final scores (11 rounds): Charlie Storey & David Egglestone 6, Danny Gormally 5½, Graeme Oswald 5.

PS - Charlie was also awarded the Battle Chess Award for the 'best fighting tiger spirit in games' and the U2300 most improved player rating. Lara Barnes was also awarded the Boxall Trophy for outstanding contributions to the championships. Finally, Ted Jarah came =3rd in the U125 with 3½/5. Congratulations to all. (Updated 28/8/07)

Peterlee Chess Club has recently started the Chess NE1 Forum, a discussion group for all chess players in the NE. A permanent link to it has now been added to the navigation bar on the left of this page. (6/8/07)

Congratulations to Jesmond Rookies won the Summer KO Final by beating Gosforth Empire on 1/8/07). The result was a 2-2 tie (no handicap), but JR won because they had lower grades. Details now on the 'League etc' page. (3/8/07)

The latest Zollner Book is now available from John Wheeler. This contains all the games from the Zollner, Sell and Newcastle for the season 2006/7. The cost of the book is £4-20 if obtained directly from John, or £5-00 if posted to you. Please make cheques payable to John Wheeler. There are 86 pages, with many diagrams averaging one per game, and varying degrees of analysis. There is only a limited number of copies available, so apart from existing orders, it's first come first served. (2/6/07)

The ECF is organising an e-petition to the government to try to persuade it that chess is a sport (i.e. part of the 'Chess as a Sport' campaign. This is a joint initiative with other mind-games. One of the main reasons being that if successful, extra funding may become available. Please click on the link, read and sign the petition. (23/2/07)

Major: 1st - Bryan Harkness (Consett) 4½, 2nd= - Philip Mitcheson (Middlesbrough), Collin Smith (Peterlee), Nigel Holroyd (Peterborough), David Richardson (Teesside Hungarians) 3½.
Intermediate: 1st - Stephen Carter (Peterlee), 4½, 2nd - Gagik Abaryan (Gateshead Libs) 4, 3rd - John Reddington (Peterlee) 3½.
Minor: 1st= - Graham Matthews (Hartlepool), Geoff Shearing (Eldon Leisure), David Castle (Guisborough) 4.
Novice: 1st - Conrad Green 8½/10, 2nd - Kevin Waterman 7, 3rd - Russell Edwards 6
