Congratulations to Northumberland's correspondence team who, after being relegated last year, have won the Sinclair Trophy, the second division of the County Correspondence Championships with a score of 17/26. This is a kind of postal Jamboree, in which the players are mixed up and play people from different teams. The winners were: Jonathan King, Paul Bielby, Mike Nicholson, John Wheeler, Colin Colson, David Weldon, John Morton, Robert Forsythe, Les Palmer, David Baynes, Alan McTaggart and Sheila Drummond. News from the Hartlepool Congress (from John Turnock). Jonathan Hawkins (Leam Lane) was 2nd= in the Open on 3½/5; Paul Bielby (Jesmond) won the Major outright with 4½; Chris Wardle (Haymarket) was 2nd= in the Intermediate with 4, while young Thomas Glover (Jesmond) scored a commendable 3½. Prizewinners at the Hebburn Rapidplay (U120) on Sat 20/5/06 were: 1st= Chris Wardle (Haymarket) and Derek Fowers (Kings) with 4/5, 3rd= K Lorraine (Hetton Lyons) and Stan Johnson (S Shields) with 3½/5. Chris was awarded the All Comers Shield by virtue of having a superior countback score. (21/5/06)
At the Les Boxx Memorial Rapidplay in Hartlepool (15 April), Gagic Abaryan (Gateshead Libraries) won the Major with 5½/6, while his team-mate Kyril Fomin came second with 5. In the Minor, Stan Hawes and Stan Johnson (both S Shields) came 3rd= with two others. (18/4/06).
At the Durham Congress, (7-9 April) Jonathan Hawkins (Leam Lane) continued his good form by winning the Open outright with 4½/5. Other local successes were: Major - Antonio Moneva-Jordan (Tynemouth) and Mark Taylor (Tynedale) shared 1st place on 4/5 with a few others, while Raymond Muzuwa (Kings) was first equal with 4/5 in the Minor. Your reporter left before all games were finished, so it's possible that other NCA players were also among the prizewinners. Please advise if I've missed anyone. (9/4/06)
The NCA Rapidplay Championships took place on Sun 19/3/06. Congratulations to Roger Coathup (Tynemouth) who won the Open outright with 5/5. Other winners were: Open 2nd= Charles Storey (Jesmond) and Colin Walton (Peterlee) (3½); Major 1st: Lara Barnes (Tynemouth) (4½), 2nd James Turner (Morpeth) (4), 3rd Cyril Fomin (Gateshead) (3½); Minor, 1st Raymond Muzuwa (Kings) (4½), 2nd= Gary Clarke (Consett) and Kevin Rowden (S Shields) (4).The full results are now available. Here are some more local players' results from recent congresses. Apologies if I've missed anyone, please advise (updated 25/1/06): John Turnock (Jesmond) played in two tournaments at the Hastings International New Year Congress in January. He came =1st in the Weekend Major (4/5), then was =2nd in the New Year Morning 'A' Section. At the York Congress (early Jan). Jonathan Hawkins (Leam Lane) was =2nd in the Open with 4 points, and Antonio Moneva-Jordan (Tynemouth) won the Major with 4½. (Reported by AM-J). (24/1/06).
About 15 NCA players took part in the Cleveland Congress on 20-22 Jan at Hartlepool. In the Open, Jonathan Hawkins (Leam Lane) was first with 4½/5; Paul Bielby (Jesmond) was =3rd on 3/5; Roger Coathup and Tim Adams (both Tynemouth), also did well with 2½. In the Minor, young Sophie Seeber did herself credit with 3 points. However the star performance was by Matthew Holborow (Kings) who won the Minor outright with an amazing 5/5. .
Nick Tavoularis (Leam Lane) played in the Masters tournament at the recent Hastings International Congress and did extremely well, ending with 5/10, in a field which included 10 GMs, 13 IMs and 4 FIDE Masters. (8/1/06).
